What to expect from a Winston-Salem newborn photo session

Welcome to my blog

Common questions parents ask before booking a newborn session.
Wondering what to expect? Let your Winston-Salem newborn photographer answer them for you!

Newborn photography is so different from any other genre—it’s something you don’t truly understand until you experience it with your own baby.
After photographing hundreds of newborns and creating consistent, beautiful artwork for my clients, I’m answering some of the most common questions parents have about what to expect during a newborn photography session.
Scroll down to learn more, and hopefully feel a little more prepared for your baby’s session!

 1. We follow baby’s cues.

One of the most common questions I get from new parents is, “What happens if my baby doesn’t cooperate?” The good news? Your baby is in charge! The entire session is baby-led. No pose is ever forced, we will closely watch baby’s cue during each pose. If baby wakes up, gets uncomfortable, or starts crying during a pose, that’s their way of telling us they’re not feeling it—and we simply move on. Don’t worry, though! I have lots of poses and ideas built into my workflow, so we always have plenty of options.

2. Baby can be awake AND asleep!

A newborn session doesn’t have to mean baby sleeps the entire time. When baby is sleepy, we can create those sweet, curly poses and adorable little details. When baby is awake, we’ll capture those beautiful eye contacts and all those curious little expressions. We’ll also dress baby in some adorable outfits for relaxed, awake shots.

 3. Parents, you can actually relax!

I know you’re probably exhausted—you just had a baby! Most of the time, I’ll handle the posing, soothing, wrapping, and photographing. The only time I may ask a parent to step in is as a spotter if I need to briefly step away from baby. Otherwise, sit back, relax, grab a drink, and watch some show you like, and of course you can watching your little one be photographed too.

 4. Baby’s comfort always comes first.

Gentle posing is very crucial to ensure baby’s comfort, as well as let baby stay asleep. And newborn posing is also designed around natural newborn movements and positions. Many of the poses mimic the curled-up positions babies naturally take, similar to how they were positioned in the womb. That said, every baby is different. If baby is uncomfortable, they will let us know—and we listen! No photo is ever more important than your baby’s comfort and safety.

At the end of the day, there is no “perfect baby” needed for a newborn session. Some babies sleep through everything, some need lots of cuddles and breaks, and some are wide awake checking out the whole studio. We simply work with the baby we have that day.

You bring your sweet baby. I’ll bring the patience, experience, and a whole lot of plans.
